‘At my age I'm hardly going to get into a weight programme and do ‘'Tarzan''. I could have the best body sculpting in the world but I'm never going to be James Bond again'.
What about James Bond Senior? Mock horror and:' You want me to play Roger Moore's father?'
Connery, toned from his golf and his daily swim, six foot, two inches tall, weighing 185 pounds, still fills doorways and catches the glances in every room he captures. You feel he could still play anything.
He just has. Once again he is supporting a younger actor -- this time the longtime seriously box office underrated Dennis Quaid --and this time the Last Movie Star is playing the Last Dragon.
‘Dragonheart' is an enjoyable fancy in which special effects wizards breathe fire into a when knights-were-bold tale of one man and his friendly neighbourhood dragon.
Connery is the voice and overwhelming personality of Draco the final figure of the mouth-to-mouth flame-throwing species. He gets in cahoots with Quaid's cynical knight and they operate a dragon-slaying scam in a kingdom rules by David Thewlis' despotic Einon.
It is all wonderfully silly and entertaining. The big difference between these special effects and movies like ‘ Jurassic Park ' is that for the movie to work Draco has to be a major character. Enter Connery:
‘He is a great character and I adored the script. The idea of the story is so human in its way, that the dragon was the original intelligence and that man destroyed them because they were sufficiently arrogant to think they had learned everything.'
The film-makers weren't arrogant at all. They were concerned. Director Rob Cohen said:' There was no assurance that this dragon could ever be made to act and be real. When we started it there was technology to make him walk, to -- maybe -- make him fly and there was some indication we could make him talk. But we didn't know if we could make him talk with perfect, lip sync diction. We even had to capture Connery's lateral lisp with the tongue.
‘But I had faith so you jump in the deep end of the pool with a combination of boldness and aggression and also realising what you've taken on. If you're stupid you'll fail.
‘You have to go at this with a certain humility because you're in front of a process that can crush you and betray you at any moment. Everything I wanted to do with Draco made the effects people miserable but they love a challenge and they really came through.'
