On ‘Rumble in the Bronx ' he broke his foot jumping from a bridge on to a Hovercraft. In what increasingly seems like moviemaking by the Three Stooges he was also run over by the Hovercraft: he was suppose to hide in a hole in the path of the Hovercraft but he landed beyond the hole. Incredibly, he survived that without injury. With his foot broken on ‘Rumble' the writers had to improvise:

A stunt involving him knocking about a Lamborghini one that involved no running or jumping -- was added:' In my movies you have to think on your feet'. Or with them?

For the moment Jackie Chan's rather special take on chop-suey movies -- the flesh and blood special effect, as it were -- has made him box office. He is remarkable, the centrepiece, but the rotten quality of so much of the rest of his films -- even at $20 million for all the biffs and bams -- can only be so endearing. It remains part of the fun.

For the fullscale cultural crossover Jackie Chan needs a Spielberg or at least a Quentin Tarantino to elevate his kids-don't-try-this-at-home style of moviemaking. ‘Rumble in the Bronx ' was promoted in America by the poster : No Fear. No Stuntmen. No Equal'.

Jackie Chan should be more careful. ‘No Star' isn't exactly promotional, East or West.

After all the bashings maybe it is no surprise Jackie Chan says he can't recall all his injuries. He remembers these from his 40 movies:

Head: Fractured skull (‘Armour of God'); slashed eyelid,20 stitches ( ‘Drunken Master 2'); Disfigured right cheekbone (‘Police Story 3');

17 broken noses; broken front tooth; scarred cheeks.

Neck: Sprained from falling three stories (‘Project A').

Chest: Dislocated shoulder ( ‘Rumble in the Bronx '); pulled muscle from being dropped by crane (‘Thunderbolt'); back sprain, fractured breast plate, internal bleeding, temporary loss of memory (Police Story 1').

Arms and hands: Two dislocated elbows, broken finger (‘Project A'); broken right pinkie finger, slashed fingers after getting run over by a snowboard ( First Strike').

Legs and feet: Broken left ankle (‘City Hunter'); broken foot (‘Rumble in the Bronx '). Two random broken feet.
